Abstract:

Life Magnetics, Inc. is a National Science Foundation funded startup collaborating with Central Michigan University to develop and deploy graphene-like materials for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. By using a laser synthesis process, the company has developed a method of producing mixed diamond and graphene coatings on magnetic beads. This specific coating allows for linear single stranded nucleic acids to be separated with only CaCl2 added. The nucleic acids bind with 100 mM CaCl2 present and release in pure water. This has applications in diagnostics, drug manufacturing, and pesticide manufacturing. In diagnostics, the method allows RNA to be isolated from huge volumes of liquid, allowing for accurate and highly sensitive quantification of COVID-19 and it's variants from wastewater for population screening. Synthetic RNA is also produced in large volumes for the COVID-19 vaccines and RNA pesticides. RNA is a biopolymer whose structure changes depending on its length and composition, by changing the buffer formulations, we change the definition of what is "linear and single stranded" allowing for structural selection which allows for much more efficient high-volume manufacturing of these materials.

 

Kevin's Bio:

Kevin Hagedorn, Ph. D. graduated from the University of Michigan in materials science after doing his undergraduate degree at the same school in chemistry. He worked for 5 years as an optical engineer before starting Life Magnetics. Since founding the company in 2015, he's won two awards from the National Science Foundation, raised $1M in equity financing, and won technology company of the year awards from the New Enterprise Forum, TechTown Detroit, and at Michigan Celebrates Small Business.
