  • Title: Grid-Scale Compressed Air Energy Storage
  • Presenter:  George M. Lucas, PE
  • Presentation Length: 1.5 hr + Q&A

Abstract

The presentation will introduce Compressed Air Energy Storage as one of a handful of viable bulk energy storage technologies, including a brief history of the development of CAES, and operating experience at the McIntosh CAES Plant.  It will explain how CAES creates value for grid operators and owners of other power generation assets, and how CAES compares to competing bulk storage technologies.   There are two major CAES concepts that are commercially available today.  Both concepts will be covered, including an explanation of the major cycle and machinery configuration options, and a discussion of plant thermodynamic performance.  The presentation will conclude with a look at how developments in the pipeline may  significantly impact energy efficiency and operating flexibility of future CAES facilities.

Presenter Biography

George Lucas has 36 years of experience in the design, analysis, operation, and maintenance of turbines, generators, and other large rotating equipment.  George holds B.S. and M. Eng. degrees from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and started his professional career with FMC’s Coffin Turbo-Pump Operation.  He subsequently joined Dresser-Rand’s Steam Turbine Division in 1978, where he held a number of positions in new product development, product engineering, and project management, including Director of Engineering, and V.P. Project Management.  From 1987 to 1990, George led the design team responsible for the design and manufacture of the gas turbines for PowerSouth Electric Cooperative’s McIntosh CAES plant.  George continues to support Dresser-Rand’s CAES products, including technical support for operation and maintenance of the PowerSouth units, as well as recent developments and enhancements reflected in Dresser-Rand’s SMARTCAES Solutions.
